Q: How are Applications Evaluated?
A: Grants applicants must meet our funding priority and geographic requirements and are also evaluated based upon a number of criteria, including:

  • Impact of services
  • Population and scale of clients served
  • Program design
  • Financial need
  • Leadership
  • Demonstrated track record of success

Grant awards to returning grantees are also contingent on the timely submission of the reporting required by the Foundation on prior grants.

Q: What Size/Type of Grants are Awarded?
A: The Foundation typically awards individual grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, with most grants being between $5,000 to $10,000.  Most grants are targeted to support program or general operating expenses.  The Foundation also supports requests for capital where funding is used for specified capital improvements, vehicle purchase, etc.

Q: How Often Can I Apply?
A: Applicants may request funding once in any 12-month period.  Grants are generally awarded as single-year grants, but recipients may re-apply in subsequent years to receive up to three-continuous years of funding.  After three continuous years of funding, organizations are required to take a year off from funding and are eligible to re-apply for grant support after the off year has elapsed.

Q: Can Programs Operating under a Fiscal Sponsor Apply for a Grant?
A: Programs operating under a Fiscal Sponsor may, by pre-approval only, apply for grant support.  Grant requests coming through Fiscal Agents which have received grants within the past twelve months must be able to clearly distinguish their application as truly independent from prior applications.  Programs applying through a Fiscal Agent are encouraged to contact us by phone to discuss these opportunities.  These applicants must include in their applications complete financial information for:

  • The Fiscal Agent
  • The proposed project and applicant organization, and
  • The financial cost of fiscal sponsorship, if any, and the specific services provided by the fiscal agent for this fee

As with all prior grantees, fiscal agents sponsoring multiple grants with the Foundation must satisfy the Foundation’s reporting requirements for all prior grants prior to being considered for further grant support.

Q: What are the geographic restrictions for Clipper Ship funding?
A: In order to be eligible for a Clipper Ship grant, you must be able to show that at least 90% of the population served by your organization resides within the Route 128 loop, or in the cities of Brockton and Lawrence.

Q: I’ve created an account in Clipper Ship’s online grant application portal. Now what?
A: Once you have created an account, click APPLY on the left side of your screen. This will bring you to a page that says “please click the link below to begin your application”  – but there is no link yet. In order for the link to appear, you must enter the ACCESS CODE provided in the online instructions.

Q: My organization recently switched fiscal years. Our “2 most recent fiscal years” amount to 15/18/20 months. Is that enough?
A: If your two most recent fiscal years amount to less than 24 months, please also provide the statement for previous fiscal year. This will likely add up to more than 24 months, but a minimum of 24 months must be submitted.
